Covid-19 Safety

Impact Krav Maga has been the premier and most authentic Krav Maga training venue in San Diego since 2011. Our mission has always been to offer the highest quality technical and tactical Krav Maga training to keep San Diegans safe, strong and fit.

In addition to having set and maintained these high standards on the professional level, we have also routinely ensured the same high standards when it comes to the safety of our training environment.  This cannot be more important during the current Covid-19 pandemic, where the health of our community is of the highest priority.

Therefore, in order to protect our employees, our customers and our community we are continuously updating our safety, health and sanitation procedures at the school.

Please take a moment to review the measures we are taking to ensure the safety of our Impact family.

Individual screening and personal protective measures

Staff and instructors

Instructors and staff are trained to self-screen for symptoms characteristic to Covid-19 prior to coming to work daily.  Symptoms include, but are not limited to fever, shortness of breath, cough, headache, fatigue and muscle aches, loss of taste or smell, etc.  Employees are instructed to not come into work if they exhibit any of these and similar symptoms, or if they or someone they live with has been diagnosed with Covid-19.  All staff and instructors are encouraged to wear facial coverings when working with clients to the extent it is possible to do so.  Instructors and staff are encouraged to routinely wash their hands while on premises, and use ethanol based hand sanitizers available to them and clients throughout the gym.

Adult students and clients

A class reservation system has been setup on our website, requiring all students/clients to register for classes within a 24 hour period prior to class start.  Within the reservation system, students are asked if they, or someone in their household has exhibited any Covid-19 symptoms.  If they have, they are encouraged to refrain from training, until it is safe to do so at a later day.  In the meantime, students are encouraged to take advantage of our remote training opportunities as described in subsequent sections (see our schedule and class descriptions page to see our schedule of live streamed classes).  Those students that attend in – person classes are encouraged to wash their hands before and after each training session and use ethanol based hand sanitizers provided by the gym.

Kids and teens students and clients

All kids and teens entering the facility for training events and classes are temperature screened using infrared touchless forehead thermometer.  Teens are encouraged to wash their hands prior and after every class and use ethanol based hand sanitizers provided by the gym.  Kids are further assisted by staff to ensure they do the same.

Cleaning and disinfecting protocols

The school is regularly cleaned and disinfected using EPA Approved Disinfectants and procedures.

Class schedule has been modified to ensure sufficient time between each class to allow the staff to disinfect the mats and the equipment used.  Students are encouraged to also disinfect equipment after use with wipes containing EPA Approved Disinfectants that available throughout the school.

Commonly touched surface including door handles, light switches, pens, tables, and other common areas are also disinfected multiple times a day.

Preventative measures have been implemented to lessen the chance of spreading the virus by minimizing high-touch surfaces and sharing of equipment.  This includes:

  1. Bathrooms that in addition to having motion sensor light fixtures, have been upgraded to include touchless faucets and soap dispensers.
  2. Communal water fountain will no longer be available for use until further notice.
  3. Shared boxing gloves, shin pads and other protective equipment will no longer be offered to the students. Students will be required to have their own equipment for training

Physical Distancing Considerations

Krav Maga is a contact based system (in fact Krav Maga translates to Contact Combat).  Therefore complete social distancing cannot be maintained during training.  However we have taken measures to ensure training opportunities for those that wish to have the option of social distancing, as well as those that have underlying medical issues that put them at higher risk of complications as a result of Covid -19.

Adult classes

Students are asked to inform staff and instructors on their preference when it comes to training.  This includes the desire to engage in partner to partner interactions, or the preference for social distancing drilling.  We will make sure we will accommodate both requests to the best of our ability and separate the class according to the students’ preferences.

Furthermore, new classes and programs are offered with some specifically more suitable for social distancing and remote learning.

  1. Krav Maga mastery class is designed to drill techniques independently while maintaining social distancing, using heavy bags, and other equipment. (please see our class description page for more specific information on classes
  2. Live streaming of the above class, and other classes will also be available to those unable, or unwilling to come to the gym for training.
  3. Virtual training packages are available to those that prefer to learn from the comfort of their home. These include monthly prerecorded video lessons and access to live video streams of daily lessons from the gym.  Those looking for a hybrid of in-school and remote learning, additional training packages are available.  (please see our rates page for more descriptions)

Kids and teens classes

Teens’ classes will have no student to student contact.  Rather, students will perform techniques using heavy bags, and other equipment and will interact directly with instructors when doing offensive and defensive activities.  Instructors will be wearing face coverings and try to minimize the cumulative duration of their interactions with the students to lessen the chance of infection.  Siblings will be permitted to work together if interested.

Kids’ classes will too have no student to student contact.  Students will engage in games and drills that will try to keep social distancing guidelines to the best of our ability.  Defenses will be taught and practiced with students interacting directly with the instructors.  Instructors will be wearing face coverings and try to minimize the cumulative duration of their interactions with the students to lessen the chance of infection.  Siblings will be permitted to work together if interested.

Space considerations

All classes will be limited to 16 participants.  This will be regulated by the registration system mentioned earlier in this article.  Given the size of our facility, this will minimize overcrowding and allow for more distancing options for students, staff, instructors and visitors.

There will be “one way traffic” in and out of the gym using different exits to minimize overcrowding and congestion.

Seating arrangement has been adjusted to allow greater distance between seats and distinct areas for students and visitors to prevent overcrowding and congestion.

Other considerations

Face coverings

Face coverings are highly recommended for all students, clients and visitors to the gym.  Individuals should do their best to keep facial coverings on when interacting with other when not training.  Once training commences students are still encouraged to have facial coverings, but we understand that some exercises will not allow for masks to stay on, nor will allow for students wearing the masks to breathe normally and safely during strenuous activity.  Therefore, those willing to train without a mask can do so at their own discretion.  Instructors and staff will do their best to keep facial coverings on when training and teaching others to the extent it is safe and feasible to do so given the nature of the exercises they are performing.  Masks will be available for purchase at the gym for those that arrive without one.

Indoor training shoes

Students and instructors will be required to wear clean indoor – only training shoes that are to be used when training in the gym’s matted areas.  These shoes are not to be worn outside, therefore upon entering the gym, individuals will be able to change from your outdoor footwear to the indoor training shoes before entering the matted area.  It is also important that these shoes have smooth soft soles to minimize chances of injuring training partners or damaging any equipment.  Please ask staff for suggestions as to best footwear to meet these requirements.
